Greetings,

Welcome to our on-line home.

The second regular session of the 25th Alaska Legislature gaveled out sine die on April 13, 2008.

In total, we passed 272 of the 879 bills and resolutions offered over the last years.

Our Republican Majority successfully organized a leadership team that conducted open and orderly sessions. We got done on time, and we completed the bills that addressed good priorities.

  • well-organized, open and orderly 90-day session

  • conducted Open Caucuses on all gas pipeline options

  • accessible to the media and Gavel to Gavel coverage

  • public hearings on the budget - focused on communities statewide

As Speaker of the House, I am proud of our efforts to rebuild trust with the public. We worked with Governor Palin and the Senate to craft clear and clean Ethics laws for all executive branch employees, legislators, and legislative staff. It is an honor and privilege to serve in the Legislature, and as elected officials we have an added responsibility to act with integrity.

Record-high crude oil prices have created state revenues under Governor Palin's new oil severance tax plan (ACES). We deposited over $5 billion into savings accounts, and we set aside an additional billion-plus for funding education in next year's budget.

Our 2008 adjournment package is available here for your review. Please be sure to check back for more news and information about the accomplishments of the State House Republican Majority.

Sincerely,

John Harris - R-Valdez
Speaker of the House
