Bureau of Land Management Travesty Wells in Alaska
A Message from Representative Charisse Millett
Welcome to the Alaska Legislature’s travesty wells website. Its purpose is to provide Alaskans with the latest information on the status of 136 oil and gas wells drilled by the federal government in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska from 1944 to 1981.
The photos on this page only give a hint of the devastating environmental damage these unplugged wells have inflicted on the arctic landscape. The harm to the wildlife and waters in NPR-A is all the more remarkable when you consider who is responsible.
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is charged with protecting the reserve’s natural wonders but for the past 30 years has failed to create an aggressive remediation plan.
Our goal with this website is to post all the information available about travesty wells so Alaskans can stay informed about the state’s effort to make the federal government meet its obligation to protect and preserve federal lands in Alaska.
More information will be posted to this website as it becomes available so be sure to check back often and call my office if you have any questions or don’t see something you are looking for.
Alaskans will not tolerate negligent management of our wild lands. Let’s send a message to Washington D.C. and demand they take action on these wells before more harm is done.
