House Energy Special Committee

Dear Alaskans,

Welcome to the House Special Committee on Energy's Webpage. It is designed to help you track the work the committee and the legislature is doing on energy issues. Energy has become one of the most pressing issues facing Alaskans. The meteoric rise on oil prices poured billions of dollars into state coffers. It also sent energy prices soaring making it even more difficult for urban and rural Alaskans to pay their energy bills.

Our energy picture is unlike anywhere else in the United States. We have several far flung regions with different energy resources, using different technologies to generate power and heat and few of them have an electrical grid to increase reliability and lower rates.

The House Special Committee on Energy has worked all year drafting the blueprint for a strategic statewide energy plan. Field hearings were held in all regions of the state. That allowed us to learn from local government leaders, business owners and everyday Alaskans to learn what the state's energy needs are and how best to solve them.

This webpage contains all the work the committee has done this year. You will find the Stakeholders Energy Policy Bill that creates an overarching energy policy for the state and the Omnibus Energy Bill that brings together various energy bills into one piece of legislation. Both will be pre-filed for the 2010 session. Written testimony and summaries of all the field hearings are also posted.
