Guiding Principles for the 28th Legislature to be Released - Caucus to Debut Core Values at Friday's Weekly Press Availability

Contact : Will Vandergriff, 465-5284

Leadership and members of the Alaska House Majority Caucus will lay out their Guiding Principles for the 28th Alaska Legislature at tomorrow's weekly press availability.

House Majority Leader Lance Pruitt, R-Anchorage, will be joined by Caucus leaders and other members at 9:00 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2013 in the Speaker's Chamber.

Caucus members have met extensively throughout the opening month of the First Session to discuss the issues and challenges facing Alaska and ways to address them. A similar process was undertaken during the 27th Legislature, and helped that Caucus prioritize their work and gain a deeper understanding of the diversity represented within the caucus.

Peggy's Corner of the House - Week 4

Contact : Elijah Verhagen, 465-5269

Hello again from Juneau. Another busy week has passed and my staff and I are settled into a routine or as close to a routine as is possible in Juneau!

We are charging forward in the Resources Committee with a lot to accomplish this session. This week we have been thoroughly reviewing legislation that is designed to expedite the construction of an in-state natural gas pipeline from the North Slope to consumers in the rail belt region and to a saltwater terminal. We started the scoping process on this in 2010 and are now determining if it is feasible and in the states' best interests to move forward.

I am pleased to report that we have passed HB 77 out of the Resources committee last week. This bill is intended to help the Department of Natural Resources become more timely and efficient in their water and land permitting programs. We are now reviewing and listening to testimony on HB 78 that seeks to develop a program for regulating dredge and fill activities in waters and wetlands of the state - the program that is currently regulated by the US Corps of Engineers.

Peggy's Corner of the House - Week 3

Contact : Elijah Verhagen, 465-5269

I introduced a Legislative citation this week designating February as American Heart Month in Alaska. This also recognizes the American Heart Association and their efforts in reducing cardiovascular disease in Alaska. This year the AMA is focusing on encouraging citizens and especially women to recognize the warning signs of a heart attack or stroke.

The Resource Committee has been very busy this week.

This bill does NOT change clean water standards or the criteria for a mixing zone.

Peggy's Corner of the House - Week 2

Contact : Elijah Verhagen, 465-5269

Hello and welcome to week two of Peggy's Corner of the House. This has been a busy week with the beginning of the Session, startup of Committees and a high volume of visitors through my office. We have quite a few new faces here in Juneau and the energy level is very high. We all realize that the decisions being made this session will affect our state for a very long time to come.

As many of you may have seen in the news or on the Legislative site, there has been a flurry of bills introduced by the Governors' Office, Senators and Representatives. My staff and I are carefully reviewing the bills, doing research and determining how these bills may affect our state and you as constituents.

Over the course of the past 2 weeks I convened the joint House and Senate Transportation Committee meetings with the Department of Transportation to get discussion going about the proposed change in direction from one Alaska Class Ferry to 2 smaller ships. We have given equal time to both the DOT and the public. We want to be sure the new design for the ferry is robust enough to withstand the rough seas and high winds of the Lynn Canal, that the design is comprehensive enough to meet the needs of our passengers and in the best interests of the communities affected as well as provide local shipyard jobs. We had over 2 hours of public testimony and countless other communications from our constituents throughout Alaska. This is a perfect example of the Legislature at work on your behalf. It is obvious through this discussion that we are all looking forward to seeing the design when it is presented to the committee.

Peggy's Corner of the House - Week 1

Hello and welcome to Peggy's Corner of the House. I'm excited to be back in Juneau representing our new District 33 in the State House.

This is my third year serving as House Majority Whip. Through this leadership position, I assist the Speaker of the House and the Majority Leader to coordinate ideas and garner support for proposed legislation, and whatever other help they may need. If the majority leader is absent I fill in for him in the House Chambers - I once even filled in for the Speaker of the House. I will be working closely with other House leadership members, the Senate leadership and the Governor to make our session a productive one. Those of us in leadership work very hard keeping the lines of communication open between the Senate, House and the Governor.

I'm looking forward to another exciting year with a dynamic and capable staff. Rebecca Rooney, from Wrangell, continues as my Chief of Staff, and has been with me for eight years. Becky is very familiar with all the issues that have been before the legislature in the past several years, and really helps me advance the issues that are important to District 33. She is the Committee Aide for the Transportation Committee and oversees all office operations. Becky will be the primary contact for Wrangell & Hyder constituents'.
