News from Bob Herron - Constituent Visit to the Aleutian Chain

Each session, state legislators are allocated funds and encouraged to visit their respective communities. Last weekend, I had the opportunity to visit my district and meet with several constituents to discuss local, regional, and statewide concerns.

Unalaska is an island of approximately 4,000 residents. Along with my other regional hub of Bethel, Unalaska City is another economic powerhouse in the region which I now represent after redistricting.

With a full agenda arranged by my in-house "Aleutians ambassador", Doanh Thi Tran, I participated in several meetings and community events with constituents from the Aleutian Chain, namely, the City of Unalaska and Akutan. From Illiuliuk Family & Health Services Clinic to the fisheries and newly constructed airport in Akun, I was able to not only hear, but witness firsthand the triumphs and challenges of those constituents I am proud to represent. Several issues talked about include policy issues related to education, health and wellness, fisheries, transportation (marine and aviation), infrastructure systems, and public safety. Although I have returned to Juneau, I will be keeping in mind the issues discussed during my district visit.

News from Bob Herron - Spotlight on Youth

Cingarkaq Pavilla is a young lady from Bethel whose family is originally from Mekoryuk. Currently attending Mt. Edgecumbe High School, Cingarkaq was encouraged in her Government class to participate in a community outreach effort. She was nice enough to write me a letter expressing her concerns about a community problems and suggested spreading awareness of programs that are dedicated to keeping families safe in the community.

Even though graduation is near and Ms. Pavilla has plans to study Mechanical Engineering, she is still passionate about helping promote a safer environment in her home community as a young person. I want to thank Cingarkaq for her activism and wish her the best of luck in Mechanical Engineering studies at UAA next year.

News from Bob Herron - Serving our Rural Communities

I am pleased, this session, to look out for the needs of our rural communities as a member of the House Community and Regional Affairs Committee. Our first meeting this week provided an overview of the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development's Division of Community and Regional Affairs (DCRA). The division maintains seven regional offices across the state, providing a wide range of services to our communities - from helping keep us warm in the winter, flood mitigation resources, financial and land management assistance, and other services to support the work of local governments. If you think DCRA may be of service to your community, please contact them. Or, feel free to contact my office any time; my staff will gladly connect you with the best resources available for your specific concern.

Before the start of the 2013 legislative session next Tuesday I wanted to update you on issues important to western Alaska.

Budget Development
