Legislative Update - The Energy Battle

The issue of energy comes up in discussions with nearly every visitor from rural Alaska that comes into my office. Many are confused as to why the legislature is not doing more. Some seem to understand the grim reality that there is no silver bullet that exists, save for possible rural benefits from the eventual building of an in-state gas line. Prices have soared particularly high during my tenure in the legislature, which started in 2007. In fact, we're only a few dollars removed from the record oil prices of July 2008, which, while good for the state's treasury, has been devastating for those who rely in on diesel fuel to heat their homes and provide their electricity.

For the most part we were fortunate through the eighties and the nineties, when oil prices were low enough that most rural consumers were not paying 40 to 50 pecent of their household income on fuel bills. With oil prices rising since the early 2000's, we at the legislature have raced to come up with solutions. As a co-chair of the House Energy Committee in 2009 and 2010, I helped lead the charge to create a statewide energy policy and fully fund programs that were created to defray the rapidly rising costs of energy.

Today as oil revenues decline and the legislature begins to focus on how to curb government spending, a key priority of mine will be to make sure that the legislature continues to invest in energy.

Legislative Update - Rep. Edgmon Named Bush Caucus Chair

This week it was my honor to have been selected as chairman of the House Bush Caucus—a bipartisan group of 12 representatives whose districts include substantial rural constituencies. I'm taking over after former Rep. Reggie Joule's four years of distinguished leadership.

I've been a member of the caucus since I entered the legislature in 2007, so I am truly grati-fied to be given this responsibility. We have already begun a series of meetings to establish our shared policy goals for this session. During these meetings I am reminded how valuable the caucus is as a forum for our members to develop opportunities for rural Alaskans and to collaborate on solutions to the many challenges our communities face.

We plan to work together throughout the session on our shared objectives, while also making sure that our urban col-leagues have a thorough understanding of bush Alaska's point of view on important issues. No matter where each of us might be on the political spectrum, we all share a strong and genuine desire to make our communities safer, stronger, healthier, and happier. The Bush Caucus's focus will be on that common ground.

Rep. Bryce Edgmon Named Bush Caucus Chairman

The Alaska Legislature's House Bush Caucus is pleased to announce the selection of Representative Bryce Edgmon, D-Dillingham, as chair. Edgmon takes over from former Representative Reggie Joule. The bipartisan group of House members — all with substantial rural constituencies — has already begun a series of meetings to establish shared policy goals for the 2013 legislative session.

Rep. Edgmon is in his fourth term in the Alaska House and now represents the new District 36. His constituency spans from the eastern shore of Cook Inlet west across Lake Illiamna to Bristol Bay and northward across the Kuskokwim to the Yukon.

"As a member of the Bush Caucus since first entering the legislature in 2007, I am truly honored to be given this responsibility," Edgmon said. "The Bush Caucus provides a valuable forum for legislators to develop opportunities for rural Alaskans and to collaborate on solutions for the many challenges our communities face."
