(Juneau) - The Alaska State House of Representatives today passed House Bill 336, which would allow members of telephone or electric cooperatives to vote by electronic transmission.

Bill sponsor Rep. Bob Lynn, R-Anchorage, says the bill was requested by co-ops around the state. Groups such as the Matanuska Telephone Association (MTA) have adopted bylaws that would allow for electronic voting, and need the state's help to change statute to allow them to adopt new regulations. Groups would not be mandated to offer electronic methods of voting; they would have to follow suit in modifying their own bylaws.

"Currently, co-op members may only vote in person or via the postal service," Lynn said. "But technology has presented an electronic option for members. This bill keeps us up with the times."

HB 336 now moves to the Alaska State Senate for consideration.
