Sponsor Statement: House Bill 78
Extend Board Of Public Accountancy
“Extending the termination date of the Board of Public Accountancy; and providing for an effective date.”
Posted: March 9, 2009
Status: Chapter 29 SLA 09 : 2009-06-16
HB 78 extends the termination date of the Board of Public Accountancy. Currently the board will sunset on June 30, 2009. HB 78 extends this date by four years, to June 30, 2013.
To quote the audit summary, "In our opinion, the termination date for the board should be extended. The board is serving the public interest by effectively licensing and regulating certified public accounts. Moreover, the board is serving the public interest by policing the profession and ensuring that only properly qualified individuals practice in Alaska as certified public accountants."
I encourage all the members to review the Legislative Audit report.
Although the Legislature could extend this board up to eight years, it is the recommendation of the auditor to extend four years. This decision was reached after board discussions concerning future services that may be outsourced, possible changes in the board structure and new statutes and regulations that may be pursued in the near future.
I urge your support of this bill.
