Sustainable Education Task Force

Sustainable Education Task Force

The Sustainable Education Task Force was created through passage of House Resolution 8 during the past legislative session. The main purpose of the task force is to examine and make recommendations to the State House in January 2014 about the funding of public education.

We constantly hear that we need to look at how we are funding education because there’s never enough funding for school districts and they are struggling to keep up. As legislators, we need to take a serious look to see the effectiveness of these funds and to spend the people’s money wisely while making sure that Alaska is providing the best education for our children. The education budget has increased each and every year. It’s a complex formula composed of a base student allocation, adjustments to that base (foundation program funding), pupil transportation, one-time items, grants, capital appropriations and school maintenance and construction funds. Overall, it’s almost a $2 billion dollar figure for the most recent budget.

We hope to get up to speed soon and continue the hard work of looking into the ways and means of providing excellent schools for Alaska students.

Rep. Lynn Gattis & Rep. Tammie Wilson
